Thursday’s NBA Matchup to Watch (Warriors vs Thunder)

Golden State Warriors vs Oklahoma City Thunder

(21-3)                                   (12-13)

Start Time: 10:30 PM EST

TV Channel: TNT

Preview: Coming into this game are two teams with different mindsets; one looking to start a new winning-streak, and the other looking to build on their own. The Warriors, after recently losing a tough one in Memphis against a very talented Grizzlies team, are looking to get their groove back after losing for the first time in over a month. Oklahoma City, however, currently have the longest win-streak in the NBA with 7 straight, and have also won 9 out-of their last 10. The main person to thank for the Thunder’s hot streak is last year’s MVP, Kevin Durant, who is averaging 21.5 PPG in only about 30 minutes per game due to him having to recover from an injury which forced him to miss the start of the season. KD is trying to bring OKC back into playoff contention after they started the season very poorly as a result of his absence. If Oklahoma City wants to win this game, they are going to have to really spread the ball all-around the court as they are one of the worst teams in terms of assists in the league. They currently sit at 27th in the league with only about 20 per game. This is going to be a huge problem as the Warriors have a very talented defense however they will be without Andrew Bogut who is a huge presence in the paint.

Prediction: I think the Warriors will hand the Thunder their 14th loss and not allow them to get back to .500 due to the fact that the Thunder fail to pass the ball and highly rely on Westbrook and Durant to carry the team.

Points Per Game Leaders:

OKC – Russell Westbrook (26.4 PPG) GSW – Stephen Curry (23.5 PPG)

Rebounds Per Game Leaders:

OKC – Steven Adams (7.0 RPG) GSW – Andrew Bogut (9.3 RPG)

Assists Per Game Leaders:

OKC – Russell Westbrook (6.8 APG) GSW – Stephen Curry (7.6 APG)

Rise of the Young Barça Superstar

You might remember him as someone who dazzled us with excitement all throughout the World Cup as he led his Brazilian squad to the semi-finals before losing to the eventual champions, Germany. In five games, he netted 4 goals which earned him the Bronze Boot as the third highest goal scorer of the tournament and he also delivered 16 balls into the penalty area which showed his goal-minded attitude.  This outstanding play that he demonstrated, delivered him much deserved recognition all throughout the soccer world and proved to people that even with a country resting on his shoulders, he was able to thrive when called upon.

He has been called ‘The Next Pelé’ by TIME Magazine. His name is Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, you probably know him as just Neymar. He is the Brazilian superstar who shined for Santos FC until 2013 when he was suddenly transferred to a foreign land to play for Spanish powerhouse, FC Barcelona. He was rewarded with the 10th highest transfer fee and was expected to produce right away. Things, however, did not originally pan out like he (or anyone else) would have liked in his first season at Camp Nou.

Neymar’s first season in Spain was a wild one for the Brazilian as injuries allowed him to play in only 26 of a possible 38 games in La Liga matches. He acted as if a different person and didn’t seem to have the goal scoring mentality that he once expressed. In those 26 games, he found the back of the net just 9 times. To put this number into perspective, he scored 8 goals in just 16 matches for Brazil in International matches that same year. Obviously he was not himself that season and FCB was hoping that their 107 million dollar investment wasn’t going to let them down.

As the 2014/2015 La Liga season begun, Barcelona had high hopes after recently acquiring Uruguayan star, Luis Suarez, from Liverpool who was once the Premier League’s top goal scorer. This was also a hopeful year for Neymar, who, at just 22 years of age, was looking to put his injury and work effort woes behind him as a new season was upon them. In the first three matches of the season, Neymar looked to be back to his superb scoring ways and already had 3 goals. He didn’t just stop there either and in the next three games, he added another 4 goals to his great year. Neymar has played in 13 of a possible 15 games, so far in this La Liga season, and has scored 11 goals which already tops his total from his first year in Spain in less than 13 matches.

So far this season, Neymar has looked back to his dominating goal scoring ways. He has been attacking the penalty box, firing at will, and does not seem to be afraid about being a future centerpiece for Barça. He is currently 3rd on the rankings for most La Liga goals so far this new season, only behind Ronaldo and team-mate Messi. And trust me, being behind Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is not something to droop your head over for. If this season is any indication of what may be in store during the upcoming years for Neymar, then I wouldn’t be too upset if I were FCB because he looks to be a superstar for a very, very long time.

Wednesday’s NBA Matchup to Watch (Spurs vs Grizzlies)

San Antonio Spurs vs Memphis Grizzlies

(17-8)                           (20-4)

Start Time: 8:30 PM EST

TV Channel: Local/League Pass

Preview: In their second matchup of the season, the Memphis Grizzlies will look for revenge after being handed a loss from the Spurs in their first matchup back on December 5th. This is going to be a relatively difficult game for the Grizz as they have lost 10 straight games to the Spurs and are also coming into this one after just playing a hard-fought game versus Golden State last night. One perk for Memphis, however, is that Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard will be out tonight due to various injuries. It should also be noted that Manu Ginobili sat out on Monday due to a lower back injury which could force the Spurs to rest him again tonight. Tim Duncan, on the upside, looks ready to go tonight as he got a scheduled rest-day on Monday, which the 38 year old does receive regularly. This will be a very interesting one to watch because big players such as Mike Conley and Marc Gasol have been playing extraordinary so far this year but both did play 32+ hard-fought minutes just last night, which could factor into their stamina.

Prediction: I believe with the absence of Hall of Famer, Tony Paker, and reigning Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs could be in for tough loss as Memphis has looked very strong so far this year. The Grizzlies shouldn’t have a problem pounding the Spurs perimeter defense which, without Kawhi, will be very easy for Memphis sharp-shooters to take advantage of.

Points Per Game Leaders:

MEM – Marc Gasol (19.6 PPG) SAS – Tony Parker (16.0 PPG)

Rebounds Per Game Leaders:

MEM – Zach Randolph (11.0 RPG) SAS – Tim Duncan (10.8 RPG)

Assists Per Game Leaders:

Wednesday’s NHL Matchup to Watch (Bruins at Wild)

Boston Bruins at Minnesota Wild

(15-13-3)             (16-12-1)

Preview: With only three games on the NHL circuit tonight, it’s not a great night to be a hockey fan. With that being said, the most interesting game tonight is the Boston Bruins against the Minnesota Wild. Both teams will head into tonight’s game on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs are concerned, as they are both tenth in their respective conferences. Both teams are playing the second game of a back to back tonight.  Boston lost in a shootout last night in Nashville, while the Wild lost a high scoring affair against the Chicago Blackhawks. This game is important for both teams as they try to gain ground in the  standings, but with the Bruins on a tough road trip this is a must win for game for a team that has dropped seven of their last ten. The Bruins may get the boost they need as David Krejci may return tonight. The center has played in only eleven games this year registering three goals and seven assists. The Wild have a big question mark coming into this one, Who will be in Goal? Both Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper have come down with an illness, but neither have been ruled out for tonight’s game. The Wild have called up goalie John Curry from Iowa just in case neither Backstrom and Kuemper can play tonight.

Prediction: With both clubs coming off physical games yesterday expect this one to be a little bit sloppy. Both teams will play desperate, but with the uncertainty of who will be in goal for the Wild, I would give the upper hand to the Bruins.

Tuesday’s NBA Matchup to Watch (Warriors vs Grizzlies)

Memphis Grizzlies vs Golden State Warriors

(19-4)                               (21-2)

Start Time: 8:00 PM EST

TV Channel: ESPN

Preview: In what might as well be the greatest matchup so far this season, the 1st place Golden State Warriors will take on the 2nd place Memphis Grizzlies. Both of these teams have looked basically unstoppable and are combining for 40 wins in just 46 games so far this year. Golden State will be looking to improve their franchise best, 16 straight wins, as they take on a Memphis team who is just two games behind them for 1st place in the West (and in the NBA). One problem for the Warriors this season has been injuries as they have consistently been losing some high caliber players such as All-Star David Lee to a nagging hamstring injury and Andrew Bogut to a knee problem. The Warriors still have, however, been able to keep up this insane start to the season with help from former Michigan State standout, Draymond Green, who has been able to contribute 13.4 PPG and 8.0 RPG in what has been his first season with a consistent spot in the starting line-up due to the absence of David Lee. This is going to be a tough battle for the Warriors, though, because Memphis is very strong at home with their only loss coming by a defeat from the Defending Champs, San Antonio.

Prediction: I think the Warriors will continue their franchise-best win streak and pick up number 17 in-a-row tonight as they will edge out Memphis in a game which could see multiple overtimes. Both of these teams have Top-10 defenses and this one, I believe, is going to come down to which team has the better offense and the Warriors are the second highest scoring team in the NBA right now while the Grizz are 10th. Advantage: Warriors.

Points Per Game Leaders:

MEM – Marc Gasol (19.4 PPG) GSW – Stephen Curry (23.7 PPG)

Rebounds Per Game Leaders:

MEM – Zach Randolph (11.0 RPG) GSW – Andrew Bogut (9.3 RPG)

Monday’s NHL Matchup To Watch (Kings At Blues)

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues

(15-10-6)                        (20-8-2)

Preview:

In a potential thriller, the defending Stanley Cup Champion, Los Angeles Kings, take on the St. Louis Blues. Tonights game will be the first of two meetings between these two teams in three days. These two clubs are very familiar with one another as they have faced off in two of the last three Stanley Cup Playoffs. In their first matchup of the year, Kings Goalie, Jonathan Quick stole the show with a 43 save shutout against Ken Hitchcock’s team. In the past, the Blues have struggled against the Kings going 2-7-2 over the last four seasons. With Brian Elliott still out for the Blues, 24 year old netminder Jake Allen is expected to make the start. Allen has played in fifteen games this season, winning ten of them with 2.50 goals against average. With the Kings struggling to find offense, Los Angeles looks to finish off their road trip strong as they have lost two in a row while the Blues look to stay hot as they are riding a two game win streak.

Prediction: With the the Kings losing two in a row I expect them to come out and play desperate as they look to take advantage of the of rookie goalie, Jake Allen. The Blues have struggled in the past against the Kings and I expect that to continue as Jonathan Quick will step up big time to get his team back on track.

2014-2015 UEFA Champions League Predictions

After a fall that was filled with group play in the UEFA Champions league there is now a finalized round of 16.

In group play almost all the teams that were expected to advance did, but there were a few surprises. Liverpool the runner up in the Premier League last season was eliminated. They were placed in a very talented group of clubs, that included the UEFA reigning champions Real Madrid and also a very successful FC Basel.

Another reason for Liverpool’s poor performance in the group stage is that they don’t have the same starting eleven that led them to second in the  BPL. This past offseason they lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona. Suarez led the BPL last year with 31 goals. The other player missing is last years second best scorer in the BPL Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge is still on the team but has been left off the his club’s roster because of a nagging hamstring injury that he obtained while training with the English national team. Liverpool is now in the UEFA Europa League set to face Beşiktaş.

Looking ahead to the round of 16 there will be some very exciting matches to watch. Leading off in the 2 home and away match ups in February and March is Paris Saint- Germain and Chelsea. Chelsea is currently on top of the BPL table and PSG is sitting at second in the French Ligue. Leading Chelsea will be Diego Costa and Eden Hazard. PSG has star Zlatan Ibrahimović and Edinson Cavani.

I predict that Chelsea will advance because of their deeper roster that has more experience, with better coaching from Jose Mourinho.

My next big match up to watch is Barcelona vs Manchester City. This draw will be the most entertaining because of the long history that these two teams have. Barcelona is currently sitting behind Real Madrid in La Liga while Manchester City is also sitting at second in the table behind Chelsea. The players to watch in this draw are Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi. These two Argentinians lead their clubs in goals this season in their respective leagues. They are also very good friends off the pitch. This could result in a scoring showdown between the two.

I predict that Barcelona will win this match up because of the depth of their roster. Luis Suarez will continue getting the assists that he has had since coming off his suspension. Neymar is also a threat at forward. It will be very hard for MUFC to hold back this squad that has talent at every position.

Monday’s NBA Matchup to Watch (Spurs vs Trail Blazers)

San Antonio Spurs vs Portland Trail Blazers

(17-7)                             (18-6)

Start Time: 10:00 PM EST

TV Channel: Local/League Pass

Preview: In just their first matchup since the Blazers were defeated by the Spurs in the 2nd Round of last year’s playoffs, Portland will look to prove that they have the upper-hand now a quarter of the way into the new season. With Pop choosing to rest all of the “Big Three” (Duncan, Ginobili, Parker), the Trail Blazers will look to pound the ball down low to All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge, who will try to take advantage of Duncan not being present. A win tonight would inch Portland closer to the top-seeded Golden State Warriors who are currently 3.5 games above the Blazers and 4.5 games ahead of San Antonio. The Spurs do have Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, though, and will hope to have him control the tempo of the game and pull out a stunning win.

Prediction: The absence of Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker will be too much for the Spurs to overcome and will lose this game in a disappointing fashion. Aldridge will have a huge night of scoring as the Portland Trail Blazers will earn a huge win in front of their own crowd in a rematch from last years playoffs.

Points Per Game Leaders:

POR – LaMarcus Aldridge (22.2 PPG) SAS – Tony Parker (16.0 PPG)

Rebounds Per Game Leaders:

POR – LaMarcus Aldridge (10.0 RPG) SAS – Tim Duncan (10.8 RPG)

Assists Per Game Leaders:

Monday’s Hockey Matchup to Watch

Tampa Bay Lightning at Pittsburgh Penguins:

(19-9-3)                           (19-6-4)

Preview: In the league’s most interesting game tonight, the Tampa Bay Lightning will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins. Both of these two clubs are in first place of their respective divisions and look to open up a larger lead heading into the short Christmas break. The NHL’s best player, Sidney Crosby, will miss his third straight game after being diagnosed with mumps. Radko Gudas will also be out tonight for the Lightning with an illness. The Lightning look to rebound coming off a disappointing loss to the Capitals, while the Pens look to secure two points after falling to the Blue Jackets in a shootout on Saturday. Look for this game to be won on special teams; as both the Lightning and Penguins average over ten minutes of penalty minutes per game. Even without Crosby, the Pens are still potent on offense and could create problems for Tampa Bay. With that being said, lets not overlook a very strong offensive team in Tampa Bay, who have one of the top first lines in hockey.

Prediction: Expect this one to be a high scoring game with the teams combining for at least seven goals. The Penguins offense is still explosive without Crosby and I expect them to pull out a win by a score of 4-3.

The Chicago Cubs are Officially Playoff Contenders

The Chicago Cubs will be playoff contenders starting immediately.

While this may come as a surprise to you, it shouldn’t. After making the Boston Red Sox winners after 86 years of agony and frustration, Theo Epstein joined the Chicago Cubs organizations as General Manager and President of Baseball Operations; a move that signified a readiness for an even greater test. Four years later, it appears he was up for the challenge.

My prediction here is not just based on the Cubs’ acquiring a baseball sage in manager Joe Maddon and a lefty ace in starter Jon Lester. No, those moves are actually just the finishing touches on three years of shrewd bargaining and meticulous attention to detail that have brought the Cubs to the position they are at right now.

You see, when Epstein took over the Cubs in 2011, it was a completely different situation than when he took over the Red Sox in 2002. The 2002 Boston Red Sox were a ready-to-win roster. After making some minor, yet profound, adjustments, he had won Boston two championships in a five-year time span.

Coming to Chicago, it was clear that it would take more.  And Theo was prepared.

The main indicator of this has been his productivity.

Over the past three years, the Cubs have sat in the basement of the NL Central averaging around 100 losses per season. While this is a pretty sad statistic, the Cubs have also been among the most dynamic teams in baseball during the same time span.

Since 2011, Theo has managed to clear out a slew of huge contracts for declining veterans, lock down promising young stars to long term contracts, and grow what has become the #1 farm system in all of baseball.

That’s a lot of work for just three years, and here’s a breakdown of all of it.

Getting Rid of the Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, and Carlos Pena Contracts

While these three were 35, 33, and 33 years old, respectively, and collectively produced a batting average of .261 in 2011, it was clear that they weren’t the future of the franchise. So why were they getting paid like they were? Well that’s what Theo thought, at least.

While the Cubs were limping their way to a 71-91 finish 2011, these declining veterans collected an astonishing $43,599,997.  To offer some perspective, that’s more than David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, and Yoenis Cespedes combined to make during the 2014 season. Change was necessary, and change is what happened.

Getting rid of Ramirez’s contract and Pena’s contract was easy. All Theo had to do was not resign them. Wisely, he chose not to. After making $10 million with the Cubs in 2011, Pena has managed to hit just 36 home runs since while averaging a negative WAR. And the Brewers quickly snatched up Ramirez with a 3-year $36 million deal and have received only one season of 500+ at bats in return.

Getting rid of Soriano’s contract, however, was a trickier ordeal. However, Theo managed to tap into his Boston roots and capitalize on the Yankees being the Yankees. While many would look down at a fourth place Yankees team with the highest payroll in baseball with no pity, Epstein saw an opportunity; an opportunity to finally unload the Soriano contract. Desperate for anything to help them win, the Yankees were more than willing to cooperate. While he didn’t get much in return, the process of ushering in his new vision for the team was well under way.

Locking the Young and Talented 1B Anthony Rizzo and SS Starlin Castro into Long-Term Contracts

Soon after taking the job in 2011, one of the first orders of business that Epstein oversaw as a Cub was the acquisition the young first basemen who had just had a less than stellar rookie campaign with the San Diego Padres (1 HR, 9 RBI, 46 strikeouts, 128 AB). This player was Anthony Rizzo. And after giving up an unproven pitcher in Andrew Cashner and a minor league player to acquire a 23-year-old unproven prospect, all of the sudden the Cubs had their franchise cornerstone?

Yes. Yes they did. And from that point forward, Rizzo has made Epstein look like a genius with nothing but steady improvements. In fact, the young first baseman’s WAR has improved over the last three seasons from 2.2 to 2.6 to an incredible 5.1 in the 2014 season. To offer some perspective, NL MVP Candidate Andrew McCutchen finished 2014 with a WAR of 6.4.

At the beginning of the 2013 season, after seeing his investment pay out, Epstein rewarded Rizzo with a seven-year, $41 million contract extension that kept him in Chicago’s control through 2019.

In a similar manner, the Cubs inked the talented SS Starlin Castro, who has averaged over 10 home runs and 30 doubles per season while maintaining a .286 career batting average during his five year career with the Cubs to a seven- year contract that would keep him in the Cubs control through 2020.

With two franchise players in place for the long-term, it is now a matter of building around them, which brings up the next aspect of the Cubs organization that Epstein has developed.

Growing the #1 Farm System in All of Baseball

If you don’t believe me, just look at the Cubs depth chart. There you’ll find four rookies, all under the age of 25, who have demonstrated promise at such an early stage of their careers. Outfielder Arismendy Alcantara and second basemen Javier Baez weren’t quite at a major league level when they were given their first dose of the big leagues towards the end of the 2014 season, but still represent lots of potential for the Cubs, whether it be on the field or the trading block. Furthermore, outfield Jorge Soler and starter Kyle Hendricks have already began demonstrating the types of contributions that they can make at the major league level.

In 89 at bats, Soler managed a .292 BA while hitting 5 home runs and driving in 20 RBIs. Projecting this small sample size out to a full season (600 AB) would put Soler in the 30 HR/100 RBI club easily.

Then, there was Hendricks. I had the privilege of seeing the 25-year-old Dartmouth alumnus shut down the New York Mets at Citi Field in a 7 inning, 3 hit, 1 earned run performance, but this was no exceptional start for Hendricks. In fact, Hendricks gave up 2 or fewer runs in 10 of his 13 starts last season and finished with an ERA of 2.46 and a WHIP of 1.08. Again, a small sample size, but it still offers a whole lot to be optimistic about.

The scary things is, even if this wave of prospects doesn’t pan out, the Cubs still have a whole other wave of prospects waiting in the wings, including guys like Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, and Kyle Schwarber.

……………………………………………………………………………

With these pieces in place, Epstein successfully laid the foundation upon which he plans to build his vision of the Cubs organization.

So far this winter, we’ve seen lots more construction taking place. First, there was the addition of Joe Maddon. Maddon enjoyed great success as the Tampa Bay Rays manager and demonstrated that he is the type of manager that can make a lot out of a little. However, after dishing out big money for prized free agent Jon Lester, the Cubs have made it clear that Maddon won’t need to do that anymore. The Cubs have also added starter Jason Hammel, who posted a solid 3.47 ERA and 1.12 WHIP between the Oakland Athletics and the Cubs in 2014, and catcher Miguel Montero, who has averaged a career .342 OBP.

However, these are not the moves that are turning the organization around. No, this is an organization that has already been on the up and up. These are the finishing touches being made to an organization that Theo Epstein has gutted and built from the ground up. After this most recent wave of additions, it’s clear that the Cubs are now a playoff caliber team. As the pieces continue to fall into place, they’ll only get better.
